Defining Family & Home
Growing Up with Bradley
Growing up with my brother Bradley has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. From a young age, Bradley taught our family about patience, kindness, and unconditional love. Some of my favorite memories include celebrating holidays, being with family and enjoying simple routines that made him happy. There are two vacations which I will always remember. When Bradley was 5, our family went to Colorado and we were hiking. When Bradley got tired he sat down in the middle of the hiking trail and would not get up. Needless to say, we turned around and our hike was over. The other was when Bradley was about 30, I took him to Walt Disney World. Seeing the amazement through his eyes melted my heart. It will always be one of my best vacations. Bradley has always found joy in being around people, laughing, and feeling included. Being his sibling helped shape me into the person who I am today.
Our family first learned about Hope Village many years ago while searching for a long-term living option that would give Bradley safety, support, and a strong sense of community. We wanted a place where he could live independently but never feel alone. When we visited Hope Village we immediately felt something special. The environment was calm, welcoming, and full of people who truly cared.
It means a lot to me that all the staff members know the residents personally and treat them like family. Bradley has opportunities to grow, learn, and socialize while still receiving the support he needs. Hope Village allows him to have his own home while being part of a caring community, which was very important to us.
One aspect of life at Hope Village that makes me especially happy is knowing that Bradley is safe and supported every day. He has friendships, activities, and a routine that gives him purpose. Seeing him comfortable and content brings peace to my heart. I know that even when our family cannot be there, Hope Village is always be there for him. We live close and see Bradley very often, which includes taking him to church every Sunday. In the afternoon he is always ready to go back to his house.
Volunteering at Hope Village has offered me the opportunity to first hand see the sense of community at Hope Village. My husband, Jimmy and I are on the outreach team at our church, HighPoint. We have the privilege to sponsor several events for the Villagers. This year he hosted a Prom in May, a Glow Party in November and a weekly Craft Club. These activities allow my family, our church family and friends to stay connected to the community that supports my brother. For Bradley, it means seeing familiar faces and sharing activities together. For me, it means giving back to the place that has given our family so much.
Hope Village is not just where Bradley lives. It is his home that he loves and I am deeply grateful for it.
